Discussion:
PC re-hibernates if I don't do something within about a minute

After I resume from hibernation, if I don't move the mouse or do
something on my Acer C300 then it will go back into hibernation in just
about a minute. This means I have to sit there waiting for it to wake up
and move the mouse rather than just turn it on and go do something else
for a couple of minutes. If I just stop paying attention for a bit while
getting my books out of my bag the darn thing will go back into
hibernation. It is really frustrating to have to turn my tablet back on
several times in a row just because I got distracted.

I have my tablet set to never standby or hibernate while plugged in and
to standby after 10 minutes and hibernate after 30 while on battery.
Well, the problem happens whether I am plugged in or not. Plus it skips
right over standby and goes straight to hibernation.

Now that I think about it I had a similar problem before where it would
just hibernate at random even in the middle of using it. And, no, the
"solution" is not to just turn off hibernation since I depend on it so
heavily. Besides, this is touted by Microsoft as one of the important
features that enables Tablet PC's to be so mobile.

So, does anyone have any suggestions other than turning off hibernation
or rebuilding my entire PC and hoping it does something other than waste
my time.

Do you have Wake on LAN enabled, Grant? If so, you might try disabling
that. Take a look at this Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815304 and
particularly the Hotfix information available. I'm not exactly sure if this
would cure the oddity you're seeing, but perhaps it is related.

Do you have a USB storage device connected to the Tablet PC? That could
also affect the Standby or Hibernation functionality.

Now that I think about it I had a similar problem before where it would
just hibernate at random even in the middle of using it.
I got exactly the same problem(s) here, also C300. And even with
hibernation disabled, booting XP and then just letting it sit
unattended on the login screen for ~2 minutes, the tablet will
either shut down or hibernate again, even though AC power settings
say "always on".

One workaround in slate mode is to place the tablet pen on the
screen. This often causes the cursor to move a little bit every once
in a while. But it's not a bulletproof workaround... I'm sure there
are better solutions. Though not that I know of any ;-) (and btw,
I've no WOL enabled, and this is my second fixed motherboard and
third digitizer, so I think that maybe the 'unwanted shutdown or
hibernation' problem can't be due to bad hardware)

And the other problem you mention... had that one too, with the
tablet automatically hibernating at around 60% and 40% battery
charge left (despite all settings telling it to first suspend at
~15%, hibernate ~5%, IIRC). Installing SpeedSwitch XP
(http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/) solved that problem for me.
But it had no effect on the first problem.
