Hi. I am trying to activate windows xp tablet edition, but I keep being told
that it has an incorrect product key. I tried calling Microsoft for a new
one, and after being shunted from one department to another I received a new
one but it didn't work either. The product identification number identifies
my OS as windows xp professional. It does not have an OEM prefix, so I assume
it wasn't installed by Toshiba, the manufacturer. I am utterly confused. Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated.

What media did you use to install? Do you have Tablet PC Edition on your
system, i.e., the Tablet Input Panel, it works with your digitizer, etc.?
Or do you have Windows XP Pro only? Right-click My Computer and select
Properties. If you got a correct installation, using a Tablet PC product ID
number, then on the General tab it should show you something like Microsoft
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. If not,
you probably used an XP PID by mistake.

Don't you have a sticker on the bottom of your tablet?

Sorry, I was away for a while. Thanks very much for your replies. Neither of
those things pointed out were the issue... the key printed on the sticker on
my laptop wouldn't work. According to System Properties I have Windows XP
Tablet Edition (i.e. tablet input works, orientaion changes when screen is
converted), but according to the Microsoft website, the product key is for XP
Professional. Desktop backgrounds also say Professional. Weird, huh? I think
the problem of activation lies in the fact that I'm ouside the US, but it's a
US stock machine. I tried calling Microsoft in the US but they didn't help.
The guy in India still gave me a new product key that wouldn't work. Anyway,
a friend has helped me "get around" the problem. Thanks

The Windows XP on the desktop is normal after SP2, so that isn't a problem.
System properties is giving the correct information.
