Between now and the time the new pen arrives (known issue with a lot of
Gateways, BTW) try using a Restore Point from System Restore to go to a
previous point to when the lock-up occurred. If you're not familiar with
System Restore, go to Start/Help and Support and do a Search for System
Restore. It will give you the basics.

I have a Gateway CX2618 tablet PC running XP Tablet PC Edition. My
stylus/pen does not completely work. It can move the cursor around the
screen but it will not allow me to select anything and it will not ink.
This
starting happening right after the computer locked up and the only way to
get
it restarted was to remove the battery. All other systems and programs
seem
to be working.
I have downloaded new updated drivers for the stylus and tried to
re-calibrate the stylus(still doesn't work to do this re-calibration).
Gateway's technical support solution is to send me a new pen (under
warranty)
but it seems peculiar that it began right after a crash. I will not
receive
the pen for several days so I am still trying to trouble shoot in case it
is
not the stylus.

I did a system state back up last weekend, would restoring that have any
effect, be good, bad or indifferent (the system restore is the same thing)???

Thanks
That didn't work. You said that this is a known issue with Gateways, can you
elaborate more and is there someplace I can go to read more about this issue.
Is it possible that it really is the pen and the system crash was just a
coincidence?
Thanks for any assistance, I really appreciate it.

Faulty pens or receivers in the pens from Gateway. I had two replaced on an
M280. 8-)

If you did a system back-up before the "crash" then by all means, try it.
Remember, though, if you've added anything personal, you may need to protect
that before restoring. I'm not sure what you've used for the back-up, but
System Restore won't touch anything in your My Documents folder structure.
I have no idea about whatever you used.

I've been using the same (second replacement) on my M280 for probably nine
months now without issue, so I think Gateway has gotten the pen design
correct now. 8-)

Chris,
Be patient, not a strong suit when it comes to computers
Wait for the new pen to see if it fixes the problem
If it does, order the extended warranty which is probably cheaper than new
pens, sounds like the new one will eventually break.
If the pen doesn't work, then do the system restore
If that doesn't work then a complete re-install of XP for Tablet
If that doesn't work sell on craigslist
Again, thanks for your help

I had a similar problem after about 12 months. I had bought a backup
pen. I tried my backup pen, and everything worked perfectly. It also
seemed the pen started getting more an more difficult this past month,
and I was using laptop mode more to avoid it. Now I am back to using
it in the Tablet mode a good deal. A working pen is essential.

Is there a battery in the pen? I don't know. It sure seemed like that.
If there is, it is not one that a user can replace, it seems. I sure
would like to know more about how that pen works.

In any case, Gateway replaced the pen under warrently. I bought the
extended warrently JIC it happens again, along with the accidental
damage warrently so that the screen is covered. Good luck.

I will help anybody with a broken, or inoperative stylus/pen get thei
pen operating again. I have started a business around this issue becaus
so many people's pens are malfunctioning (including mine originall
which drove me to do this). This was fueled by Gateway's lack of carin
around the issue, and their attempts to charge ridiculous fees fo
customer service. I charge $20 to switch out the battery to get you
stylus working again, plus shipping and handling both ways, about $2
total.
