I already have a tablet PC and a copy of XP Pro. I am currently
running Vista on the tablet, but would like to switch to XP. Is it
possible to install XP Pro on my tablet PC, and then apply the SP2
upgrade to gain tablet functionality/ features? Or would I have to buy
a brand new copy of XP Tablet Edition?

I have plans to downgrade it to XP pro <<
The only reliable way to downgrade is to purchase an xp tablet version
for that machine from the oem (hp)

No general Tablet edition is available for purchase.

Simply installing XP pro will result in loosing tablet functionality...
even if you successfully install all of the necessary drivers.

This is what caught my attention. Does this not mean that I can
upgrade my XP Pro to a tablet edition with the free upgrade/download?

Stonie,

The link you referenced has to do with upgrading the earlier version of XP
Tablet PC Edition SP1 to SP2. You cannot upgrade from standard XP Pro to
Tablet PC Edition unless you obtain the installation disks from HP are one
of the Microsoft sources such as MSDN.

If you contact HP, they should be able to help you.

According to Microsoft you can convert XPSP2 to Tablet as described in this
article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457081.aspx

We have had no luck with this process so far.

That's not what it says. It says you can install Tablet edition and desktop
editions from a single image, not upgrade an XP machine to Tablet. That
means in an enterprise environment I can build one image, and load tablets
or desktops from the same DVD, rather than having to create and maintain two
seperate baselines. Nothing in there indicates you can upgrade a unit loaded
with XP to a tablet OS.

In fact it explicitly says that this is not possible.

See Preparing your image step 5

"Due to the implementation of the Tablet PC component installation
during setup, you cannot install any missing Tablet PC components at a
later time."

Before You Begin
We recommend that you complete the following tasks before you begin
implementing the steps in this document:

Obtain the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 media. The Windows XP
Professional media do not include the necessary files for Windows XP Tablet
PC Edition 2005.

Obtain a Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 volume licensing key. For more
information about volume licensing, see the Microsoft Volume Licensing Web
site.

Understand the Sysprep process that is described in the article, Deploying
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. For more information, see the “Additional
Resources” section at the end of this document.

If you are not using an existing deployment image, or you would like more
information about deployments, visit the Windows XP Professional Deployment
Web site. This site contains detailed information about how to plan and
build your base image for the systems in your enterprise.

The is from the KB article, this is based on using Volume Licenses, do you
have a VLK? Do you have Volume Licensed Media?

As you might problay know: HP does not provide XP TabletPC edition
(except bundled with a computer). It has always been this way.
